You may want to start by following the troubleshooting steps
in the following article:
HOW TO: Set Up and Troubleshoot a Linked Server to Oracle in
SQL Server

Hi,

I have a problem when I'm running linked servers from SQL2K Develop Edition
SP3a to Oracle 8i
with MDAC 2.7RTM. OS: WinXP SP1

I get following error :

OLE DB provider 'MSDAORA' reported an error. The provider did not give any
information about the error.
OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'MSDAORA' IDBInitialize::Initialize
returned 0x80004005: The provider did not give any information about the
error.].

when I'm trying to connect to the server.

If I try to connect to the Oracle with NET8 and ODBC test it's working fine.

I have reinstalled the SQL2K and reapplied the SP and tested with different
MDAC

Any ideas what could be wrong?

Thanks,

Mikael

So after you modified the registry an enabled the trace
flag, what was the extended error information? Message
number and message?

Often times you get more info if you follow the suggestions
with the trace and profiler per the article but you said you
already did all of those.
I'd still guess that something with either the Oracle client
and/or MDAC configuration isn't correct. You could try
reinstalling the Oracle client, double checking the registry
settings (and registry permissions) and check your MDAC
configuration with component checker. You can download
component checker from:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/list/dataaccess.asp

Hi,

Sorry for the different signatures..

On trace I got following errors:

Exception Error: 208, Severity: 16, State: 1 MS SQLEM sa 1744 54
2003-11-10 11:25:12.863

OLEDB Errors
OLE/DB Provider 'MSDASQL' IDBInitialize::Initialize returned 0x80004005:
The provider did not give any information about the error. MS SQLEM sa
1744 54 2003-11-10 11:25:53.463

Exception:
Error: 7399, Severity: 16, State: 1

Should it be more information? Have I missed something?

Best Regards

Mikael

Hi,

I am getting exactly the same error. I think it may be a
problem with service pack 3a.

Did you get to resolve this ?

Thanks,
Chandra.

Yes,

but I have to reinstall it all..

I think you are right about the SP I think I'm running on a lower NDAC right
now..
