sql server connect:
I have an SQL 2000 server with two instances of SQL
installed. I am trying to connect to a database in the
second instance using Windows 2000 Pro workstations. I
have successfully connected to this instance from many
other workstations. I have rebuilt one totally from
scratch and applied all service packs and patches. The
error is "failed to open database". I have installed SQL
2000 on the workstation to prove the fault and can easily
see all databases on the default instance. If I register
the second instance to view the databases it does so
without error and when I expand the databases all I see
are the ones from the default instance. Any ideas of what
I can do or try next?

We have an executable which utilises an ini file. The
server and database are defined within the ini file.
Leaving this aside, as previously mentioned, I cannot see
the correct databases if I use SQL Enterprise Manager. (I
can easily see the databases from the first instance of
SQL.) Any ideas?

Can you explain HOW you are trying to connect?

I have tried using ip address\instancename and also
servername\instancename

That's what I'm talking about. Can you explain how you are trying to
connect using SQL Enterprise Manager? Are you using SERVERNAME\INSTANCENAME
syntax?

Perhaps the login that you use to register the instance
doesn't have the permission to see the databases. Can you
see any database (such as master and tempdb) at all?

I have thought of that and am using the Administrator's
account. I am not able to see any databases that are
really in the second instance. The databases that are in
the first instance appear under the registration for the
second instance, infact, both instances show the same set
of databases, though of course this is not the case in
reality.

Do you have any aliases defined in the cliconfg.exe on the client?

If you connect through Query Analyzer and do select @@servername do you see
the correct server\instance name returned?
