Hey,

I have seen tons of posts but no real solution for the "Unable to open
connection. Provider cannot be found. It may not be properly
installed." error message when trying to connect to OLAP.

Even after running SP3 it doesn't work. Well, you need to go to the
sql2ksp3/msolap/install/ folder and run the setup.exe. Reboot your
computer and you should be able to connect. It seems that if you just
run the sp3 package it just installs the setup to your machine, which
you then need to run.

Good luck!

Sooo, you are saying that actually running the service
pack fixies it instead of just extracting the files from
the SP3 file?

Ray,

Do a search on this error (and similar errors) and you will see that
are a fair amount of people think that they are running the service
pack but all they are doing is extracting the service pack. I was just
trying to help some of those people. I'm sorry that not everybody is
as smart as you with all of your certifications! Not!

Wow, that's not what I was trying to convey. I apologize if I gave the
high and mighty impression, I certainly don't feel that way nor meant to
convey it. Glad you got the problem fixed, and it was good form of you
to post a fix to a wide-spread problem.

Phin,

Thank you for your post! You really helped me out on this one. It
seemed to install the service pack but it was just extracting it. It
would be nice if it just installed. It seems that this is a common
problem.

Don't listen to people like Ray. We have self righteous people here at
work like Ray who like to put people down to make themselves feel
better. Low self esteem with with an jerky attitude is a toxic mix!

Ray,

I apologize that I assumed you were asking a sarcastic question. I
just took it that way because I deal with sarcastic IT people all day,
