sql server connect:
I can specify the actual server name to connect to a SQL
Server using Query Analyzer or DTS, but I am unable to
use localhost or local. When do anything with server
name, it is fine. Just not working with localhost or
local.

I checked hosts file content in WINNT\system32
\drivers\etc, it is no diff than other servers.

Anyone know something about this issue?

Thanks!

Have you tried (local) or a single period "." in the connection dialog
box?

Two major points:
1) I am making the assumption that you are actually working on the
server?
2) What network libraries have you selected?

Hi, I am having the exact same problem described above. Was there any
resolution to this? I am working directly on the machine that is the
SQL Server. The databases are all local.

I am able to use '.' within SQL Query Analyzer but not 'local' or
'localhost'. Any ideas?

My machine name is long, "shofmeister-laptop". Could this have anything
to do with the problem?
