I have tried increasing the timeout to 45 seconds. Still getting the
connection failure (Query Analyzer works fine). Tonight when I get
home I will post the error message I get. It's a typical timeout
failure message. What I don't understand is why can I connect with
Query Analyzer and not EM? I have heard that EM will use ports
137-139, does anyone know if this is true??
I have taken sniffer captures and not noted any traffic at that level
coming from EM or QA. I am only configured to use tcp/ip on the port
assigned to me by me web host. And apparently Query Analyzer likes
that configuration, why doesn't EM. Can someone help me understand
exactly what port EM is using or needs openned up -- other than the
tcp port used?
Thanks for the input and I definitely appreciate anyone helping me and
further educating me on these products or directing me to a web site
that explain more of Enterprise Manager and Query Analyzer and how
they operate.
Thanks again,
Chuck

I believe, Enterprise Manager requires more data transfer compared to Query
Analyzer. You could however, increase the timeout values for Enterprise
Manager. See

information.

All,
I am trying to connect to a sql server (2000) across the internet
using Enterprise Manager (no vpn, no dial in,etc.) - strictly across
the internet. Now, I use the Query Analyzer tool to connect and it
works, I can access the server just fine. When attempting to do the
same within Enterprise Manager I get a connection error stating to
check my sql server and make sure the service is running.. etc.
Can someone tell me what is the difference in making a connection via
Enterprise Manager as opposed to using the Query Analyzer tool???
Thanks in advance,
Chuck
