sql server connect:
Hi

I have a customer whom is experiancing a connectivity
problem with our software running on SQL server 2000 SP3
Windows 2000 Server SP4 and workstation Windows 2000 SP4.
It also has the same problem from the Terminal Services
server Windows 2000 SP4

The error is 80004005 and reads as a Timout expired. We
are using OLEDB and ADO with the connectivity client
installed at the workstation/Terminal server using windows
authentication.

I have checked with profiler using windows authentication
and this falls over with the same intermitant fault, ie
Timout expired.

I therefore don't believe that our software is at fault,
but what could be the issue? The server always pings ok,
so I don't think its IP.
They are using DHCP, with fixed IP for the servers. They
have 3 other SQL servers but don't have any issues with
these. Could they be out of licenses.

They also had a problem wile in our software. It was just
sitting there for a while in a record, and when they went
to do somthing it fell over with The Error Code =
0000000000800a0e7d
The connection cannot be used to perform this operation.
It is either closed or invalid in this context

Any advice gratefully received.
Regards

Cheers John
The server was set up with 2 cards and in failover mode,
so we are doing some work in this area to check.

Thanks

Hi

It does sound like a network problem and as other tools are failing then
this would be some proof. I would assume that profiler works fine on the
server itself? You may also want to check the sp_configure options just in
case!

Depending on how much access you have to the server/network would allow you
to determine where the problem is. For instance if you can connect a PC
directly into the server on it's own dedicated segment, then it would just
about rule out everything except the cards in each machine.

There are tools available to test the network although these don't in
general come cheap.

John
