sql server connect:

I have SQL Server 2000 running on a Windows 2000 Server. I have Outlook
(from Office 2000) installed on the server and set a mapi profile for using
SQL mail. This configuration is running ok. I once tried to install Outlook
XP but since it was not a mapi-compliant client that configuration didn't
work and I had to go back to Outlook 2000. We are now upgrading all our
clients to Office 2003 and I want to know if I can upgrade the server too.

Will SQL mail work with Outlook from Office 2003? Has someone tried this
configuration? Will I still need to use Outlook 2000 for this purpose on the
server until the end of time?

In answer to your question:

Yes you can install MS Office 2003 using Outlook 2003, however there is a microsoft know issue with MS Outlook 2003 and SQL Mail. In order to use SQL Mail, Outlook has to be running on the server AT ALL TIMES or SQL Mail or xp_sendmail will not work. The MAPI communication is severed between Outlook and SQLServerServices. The work-a-around is to have MS Outlook mail in the startup folder so that it will alway start when for whatever reason the server is taken down for backup or whatever.

yes i have done the same. There is a tech article on this. you need to go to
windows system32 dir at a dos prompt and run fixmapi.exe which restores your
mapi dll back to the one compatable with SQL and ms exchange. the outlook
2003 one is to new for exchange and sql.
