I am running SQL Server 2000 Developer (with Service Pack 3a) on

I have a small domain, one web server one sql server.
The web server has client tools installed on it. I have
applied sp3 to both machines. This afternoon, I

I have a problem with a few clients who try to launch an internal application.

SQL 7.0/NT 4.0
We have a C++ application using an ODBC call "SQLConnect"
to a SQL server which works just fine unless there's a
problem, e.g., SQL server goes down or something similar
that breaks the connection.

Experiencing 2 different errors before being able to connect to the database.
This happened 2 times, 7 days apart, and the problem was resolved by
selecting OK thru the errors and allowing the program (Access) to connect.

Does anyone know of a way to track this error back to a
given machine or process/application. I've run traces
and the only possibly useful information I've found is
the Client Process ID, but I don't know how to use it to
track it back to the culprit. It shows up in the error

In some SQL2K instances, I have (LOCAL) in others its (Local) and in
development code the connect to server parameter is always local.
Where is (local) associated to 127.0.0.1 or local server name?
If I have 2 or more instances of SQL Server on my maching which one would
(local) refer too?
