There is a write up on this error at eventid.net:

You can't have the password changed with a password reset.
It needs to be done using the Change Password functionality
so that the subsystem can go through the processes to
decrypt with the old password and then re-encrypt with the
new password. With a password reset, the old password is not
available for the process to decrypt and reencrypt.
You may want to keep a password recovery disk. You can find
more info here as well:
EFS, Credentials, and Private Keys from Certificates Are
Unavailable After a Password Is Reset

This must be my big day. I've been working on this for like a month and now
I've gotten two folks who seemed to have nailed it!! Thanks, Sue!

If I revert and find the right password, need I only avoid having a domain
admin change my password in the future? What else can I do to prevent this
from happening again?
