SQL Server 2000 Instance connectivity Issues -- sql server connect

Hello: I get the following error message when I try to do a ODBC connection:

Connection Failed:
SQL State: '01000'
SQL server Error: 11001
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]ConnectionOpen(Connect())
Connection Failed:
SQL State: '08001'
SQL Server Error: 6
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]` Specified SQL Server
not found

Can you ping the server? Did you try using server name as
well as IP address? Is the problem specific to a certain
machine? Can you connect with Query Analyzer? Is the service
running on the server? Did you try to telnet to the port the
service is listening on?
