sql server connect: Hi,

I am installing MSDE 2000 on client machines. Where can I dowload the client
connectivity tools for MSDE so that users can see and work with thier
databases?

Do I have to download sql sp4 for that? Can someone please send me the link
for downloading the client tools?

Thanks

Microsoft does not provide any 'client tools' for MSDE.

Users must have an application, or programming environment such as Visual
Studio -or even Access.

There are some third party management tools on the internet -but I don't
recall that any of them where tools for "users can see and work with thier
databases", if by that you mean execute queries, etc.

Hi Arnie,

By users seeing the databases , I mean like in Enterpsir Manager, users can
see all the databases by right clicking and can see teh schema of the tables.

Also, I have SQL SErver 2000 CD with valid license. So do I think I can copy
the client tools from there and put it on all machines Ineed MSDE on?

Which files do i need to copy for taking the client tools only?

Thanks

The client tools you have on your "SQL SErver 2000 CD" are NOT be licensed
as client tools for MSDE.

Do all the of computers that you contemplate needing 'client tools'
currently have a SQL Server Client Access License (CAL)?

I would suggest that you verify with Microsoft licensing before you put your
company/agency at risk.

Hi Arni e,

Thanks for your response. I think if we have Process license for sql server
2000, we should be able to install sql server 2000 teself on any no. of
mahcines...without worrying about installing sql msde 2000.... What do you
think?

Thanks

Also Arnie, we have sql developer edition too. Do you think I can install
that on the machines... since this will be for development only,... we wont
be using this developer edition for production.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks

That is not correct. Your 'processor' license allows you to install SQL
Server on ONE computer, and allow unlimited clients to have access to that
ONE SQL Server. And you must have one license per CPU in that computer.

If you have a second SQL Server, it must have its own license.

I suggest that you may wish to chat with Microsoft licensing to clear up any
'uncertainties'. And to also verify what is allowed use for SQL 2000 client
tools and multiple installations of MSDE.

If you are doing 'new' development, I suggest that you may wish to explore
SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition. Then there will be no question/issue
about client tools and licensing.

I believe the cost is about $50 (US) per developer, and you are allowed to
have as many SQL Servers as necessary to support your development efforts.

For more details:

Licensing -Developer Edition
My understanding of the Developers Edition license is that you are covered
for a Development server, an Integration/Staging server, even a QA/Test
server, local servers on the developers computer, etc. -as long as no one
except developers access those SQL Servers, and as long as each developer
and/or Tester has a Developer Edition License.

For a more definitive answer, check with the VL folks at: (800) 426-9400.

From: http://www.microsoft.com/sql/editions/developer/default.mspx

Each license of SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition entitles one developer to
use the software on as many systems as necessary and additional developers
can use the software by purchasing additional licenses.

From:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/c/a/ecafe5d1-b514-48ab-93eb-61377df9c5c2/SQLServer2005Licensingv1.1.doc

DEVELOPER EDITION
SQL Server Developer Edition is a separate product and is used for
development and testing purposes only. It is licensed per developer or
tester (person).

Hi Sue,

Its great to know about the SQL Web Data Admin. I installed it , but then I
go to view the page from http://localhost/webadmin/default.aspx, its showing
me the code instead of the web page.

I know this is happening coz in IIS my web sites are not configured to
regonize to .aspx extension. How to configure IIS to understand .aspx
extension? I know we have to right lick on teh properties for the node called
Web Sites in IIS, then go to Home Diretory tab, click Configuration button at
the bottom, BUt what do I enter in the next window that pulls up , i.e what
will be the executable path for .aspx extension?

Thanks

Actually, Microsoft does have a tool for administering MSDE
databases. SQL Server Web Data Administrator was developed
with this in mind. You can download it from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=c039a798-c57a-419e-acbc-2a332cb7f959&displaylang=en

You can find a list of other alternatives, options at:

If you have the .Net framework installed and need to
configure IIS for ASP.Net, you should be able to just run
aspnet_regiis -i
from the framework's folder location and it will do the
necessary steps to configure IIS for ASP.NET
This article addresses the gist of what you would need to
do:

Hi Sue,

I got the reson for the issue. The problem was that I had not selection any
authentication type in anonymous access and authentication control in IIS -->
Directory Security . I check the Integrated Windows Authentication and it
worked.

Thanks a lot for your help.

That could be related to an issue with 1.1 .NetFramework
SP1. Check the following post and suggested fix:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.sqlserver.tools/msg/806975c1c9ca88d8?hl=en&

Also check the link that the above article references to
some other similar issues and fixes posted on SQLJunkies.
It may take a bit of tweaking but you'll get it running
soon.

Somehow, I suspected, many, many, messages ago, that the OP wanted something
more like an Access front end.

From the first post: "so that users can see and work with thier databases"

Perhaps some of the 'free' third party tools that both of us have provided
links for will satisfy the need...

If I remember right, I think you have to do it through that
query window. There should be an option on the left frame as
well as on the top navigation bar to hit query when you are
viewing a database. You can save and load query files
though. It's not really good to use Enterprise Manager as a
data management tool - so it forces you into better habits
anyway :)
After awhile, writing queries to select and insert data ends
up being faster and without the problems of using Enterprise
Manager for this.

Hi.

Despite the indignance of some people, here is the link to download the SQL Server Client Tools for use with MSDE.

http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/b/d/1bdf5b78-584e-4de0-b36f-c44e06b0d2a3/SQL2000-KB884525-SP4-x86-ENU.EXE

I have downloaded MSDE and the Client Tools myself so I know this to be the case. I came across this page when searching for the client tools for a new laptop on which I have already installed MSDE.

I do wish that people would not confuse "I don't know how to do something" with "it cannot be done." There's very little in this universe that cannot be done :)

Anyway, in answer to your question, you were half right. The download is only part of SP4 (thankfully) and therefore only weighs about 67MB, and not the 240MB total SP size.

I hope this helps. Have fun!

Incidentally, if you can't install from the SP4 download, download the SQL Server 2000 Evaluation and simply install just the Client Tools.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/thankyou.aspx?familyId=D20BA6E1-F44C-4781-A6BB-F60E02DC1335&displayLang=en

It's a bigger download, but has the desired effect.

Enjoy!

I believe most people are looking for ways which are in
compliance with licensing agreements. You need a valid,
legal SQL Server CAL to install the client tools. If someone
does not have this, the methods you are suggesting are not
legal.
The gist of it is explained in the following link:
http://sqlserver2000.databases.aspfaq.com/how-do-i-manage-sql-server/msde.html

The appropriate uses of MSDE is no longer posted on
Microsoft's site since the release of 2005, but the related
Q and A stated:

Q. Can I use SQL Server tools and services in conjunction
with MSDE?

A. You can only use SQL Server tools and services in
conjunction with MSDE if you acquired MSDE through SQL
Server 2000 (Developer Edition, Standard Edition, or
Enterprise Edition), and if you are using MSDE in
conjunction with a properly licensed copy of SQL Server
2000. Visit the How to Buy page for information on obtaining
a valid SQL Server license.

Note: The tools and services included with SQL Server
Developer Edition may not be used to manage production
server environments.
