sql server connect:
Hi All,

I am getting a BSoD when opening tables using Microsoft SQL Server
Management Studio Express 9.00.2047.00. A few seconds after opening a
table, it appears that the entire form refreshes and the table's
gridlines will double for a split second. While my computer does not
crash every time this happens, when my computer does crash, it does so
just when the grid lines double. This does not appear to happen on any
table in particular and can happen on the very first table I open or,
arbitrarily, the tenth. This happens on databases that other computers
can access with no problem. The problem occurs whether I am
manipulating a local or remote database. The system appears to be
stable, otherwise.

The stop error is : Stop: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xBF8E270C,
0xB3B87788, 0x00000000) win32k.sys - Address BF8E270C base at BF800000

A zip file with my minidumps can be found at ftp.allpax.com

Troubleshooting I've done so far:
Ran Dell diagnostics.
Ran memtest86.
Uninstalled and reinstalled SQL Server Express.
Uninstalled my video adapter drivers and reinstalled with the latest
from dell.com.
Full system scan with Norton 2006.
Half a dozen other things not worth mentioning...

System Specifications:
Dell Latitude D820
Windows XP PRO SP2 w/ all updates
2.00GHz Intel Core2 CPU T7200
2GB RAM
NVidia Quadro NVS 120M

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Hi Byron
I've been getting the same error, exactly the same symptoms as you are
seeing (form refreshes and the table's gridlines will double), but when
developing other apps I see this regularly with the MS DataGridView so
had just marked that up to a 'works as designed'. I had just installed a
new bluetooth mouse and what thinking that was the culpret, not the SQL
app. I've recently installed SP1 or VS2005 and was also thinking about
re-installing to try without that.

I get the BSOD's about one a day. Very annoying, have you gotten any
further with your investigation?

I too have this issue and I have the same hardware configuration as
Byron. I am using SP2 (Dec CTP) for SQL Server, so atleast this is not
an SP issue. Maybe Vista will resolve this! :aaa

I've been meaning to post back with what I've found.

I previously had to disable my dual core support by installing
uniprocessor ACPI drivers, but when attempting to reinstall my
multiprocessor ACPI drivers I found a Microsoft article stating that
the only way to do this is to reinstall Windows. Well, I thought I
found a loop hole and was able to "reinstall" by rolling back the
drivers. This appeared to work fine, but I believe that it was causing
my problem, as I reinstalled the uniprocessor drivers and the problem
went away.

However, I did not did not use my SQL SMS Express until after I had
uninstalled and rolled back my multiprocessor drivers, so I do not
know if I would have had the same problem had I never tampered with my
ACPI drivers. I wonder, rmehta, did you, by chance, change your ACPI
drivers?

The moral of the story? Think twice before installing uniprocessor
ACPI drivers on a multicore system as you might be stuck with them.

I am also having the same issue but am on a Dell D620 2GB RAM. I'm
wondering if the problem is video driver related as when I have my
laptop in my port replicator connected to a dual screen setup I can
navigate a little longer before the BSoD - hours in some cases but
eventually I crash. When working outside the PR as soon as I open a
table I crash. Ill be interested to see what you guys come up with.
I've engaged with Dell tech support but no luck yet...
