Perhaps the problem is more related to SQL Server as your
EM is hanging. MSSearch is not tightly coupled to SQL
Server except when the catalogs are mounted/recovered when
the serivice starts and during populations.
Can you check that sql server is responding ok?
Also check for mssearch/mssci related messages in your
event log.

Could you also review SearchSetup.log usually located at C:\WINNT\ and
sqlstp.log usually located at C:\WINNT\Temp\ and post any errors or issues
related to MSSearch in either of these logs or attach these files to your
post.
Have you recently applied any SQL Server service packs? Could you post the
full output of: SELECT @@version
