Perhaps the problem is more related to SQL Server as your
EM is hanging. MSSearch is not tightly coupled to SQL
Server except when the catalogs are mounted/recovered when
the serivice starts and during populations.

Can you check that sql server is responding ok?

Also check for mssearch/mssci related messages in your
event log.

Bob,
Could you also review SearchSetup.log usually located at C:\WINNT\ and
sqlstp.log usually located at C:\WINNT\Temp\ and post any errors or issues
related to MSSearch in either of these logs or attach these files to your
post.

Have you recently applied any SQL Server service packs? Could you post the
full output of: SELECT @@version

Thanks,
John

On a new server after installing SQL 2k the Microsoft Search Service won't
start.
First error message: Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the Microsoft
Search service to connect.
Second error message: The Microsoft Search service failed to start due to
the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely
fashion.
Another strange thing is that the Enterprise Manager is taking more than 2
minutes to launch.

Any help or suggestions would be highly appreciated.

BoB

SQL Server itself seems to be responding OK.
No mssearch/mssci related messages found in the event log.
Any suggestions?
