The licensing models are Per CPU, or Server + CAL. You are forgetting the
server license ($1,849 with 5 CALs, retail), so subtract 5 CAL's and add the
server license.

And no, you're not missing anything. The Server + CAL model is much better
for some situations.

For SQL Server 2005 to maximize your SQL dollars buy Windows 2003 Server x64
Enterprise Edition. This will allow SQL Server to access much more memory.

We're about to purchase a 4 CPU Dual Core Xeon server with 4GB RAM and
Windows 2003 Server Standard and MS SQL Server Standard.

The question comes in as to the licensing - this is for an internal (not
web) application where all users are also members of the domain.

In looking at online licensing costs, a Open License call appears to be
about $260/each. CPU Licenses are $5000/each. So, if I understand, the
following is true:

50 CAL = $13000
4 CPU = $20000

The break even point is 76 CAL, but I have to wonder if I'm missing
something in licensing/costs.

Anyone know how to properly license SQL Server for 50 users access to it
without spending $20K?

Thanks.
