Newbia Question about SQL 2000 > MSDE Replication. GrownUp

All,
to someone who knows what they are talking about this will seem an extremly
stupid question, but here goes.

Apologies if I have posted this on the wrong NG.

I wrote a PDA based application which used SQL CE. The App, written in
VB.NET using the CF, allowed a user to enter data locally and then when
connectivity permitted allowed for upload to the backend SQL 2k Server. With
the aid of lots of caffeine and asprin, this worked without any problems.

My issue is I know need to mimick this on a "Fat" workstation, running an
O/S such as Windows XP. To recap, I need to write an app which will allow
the user to enter data into a local database. I'm guessing the natural
choice is MSDE. My searches on the net imply that the equivalent of "RDA
Pull" and "RDA Push" dont apply to MSDE - is this correct?

I know you can do replication between Full SQL and MSDE but my
understanding, which may be wrong, is that this utilises standard SQL ports
(such as 1433) and that it is not possible to encrypt this traffic One of
the advantages of SQL CE > SQL 2000 is that it uses TCP port 80 and can be
encrypted using SSL -becuase the routing from the client to server is via an
IIS Server.

So are my assumptions wrong?

Can anyone suggest a mechanism for allowing offline data entry for later
sunc with the back end?

Many thanks,

Dave
