Hello everyone

Was anyone experienced problems with MSDE after XP SP2
was installed? I have a client's computer that is
running MBS Great Plains using MSDE SP3, that now is
displaying an error on boot that it cannont find the
default instance of SQL. Looking at the event viewer, I
noticed that the errors started after SP 2 was
installed. Any thoughts?

Thank you for your response,

I have referenced those documents, and tried opening the
suggested ports, and even went as far as shutting down
the firewall, but I still get the message. SQL Server
could not find the default instance (MSSQLSERVER)-please
specify the name of the existing instance on the
invocation of sqlservr.exe. It then suggests re-install

I am to that point to reinstall, but was hoping for a

XP sp2 installs and configure the Windows Firewall to close all ports so
that connection can be critical... you have to manually enable and open the
desired comunication ports ...

Hi Nathan,

I tried Andrea's recommendation, setting up sqlservr.exe as an exception. It
worked.

My app needed to be installed on a salesperson's computer to demonstrate. It
would find any of several server instances if that computer was connected to
a LAN. Once unplugged from the LAN, it couldn't find any server instance,
even with the SP2 firewall off.

The firewall still seems to block when off. I've had trouble getting Remote
Desktop Assistance or Remote Destop to work.

Hi Nathan

I've had the same problems and managed to fix them.

Can you post exactly what you've tried so that I can try to help without
just sending you info about things you've already done.

Cheers

Yes, I have. But different ones. After opening port 1433/TCP, connecting
to the database worked again. But from Delphi5 using ADO, we have troubles:

Connecting to the database takes a lot of time. The funny thing is, that
our application does the same things as before. Then, at some point,
sqlsvr.exe starts working wildly: 100% CPU load, a lot of HD activity.
This takes soem time: 10 secs on fast machines, about 2 minutes on a
slower test machine. After that, operation continues normally.

Any hints, what may cause these troubles?

Can I enable verbose logging somewhere in MSDE to actually see which
queries are processed (like in Postgres)?
