sql server msde:
I took the SP4 MSDE and tried to publish sql2000.msi to active directory but
it failed.

When I ran the MSI file interactively it complained about not finding the
default instance. Obviously setup.exe must set this property?

Anyway I used ORCA to edit the SQL2000.MSI and added an INSTANCENAME and
some other properties like SAPWD and the install went through. However I
used the word "local" for instance name and it seems the install created a
named instance called "local" rather than a 'default' instance.

Now the docco i read suggests that if INSTANCENAME is not supplied, MSDE
will install as the default instance. I have also seen posts suggesting that
the computer name is used as an instance name.

I haven't been able to find the magic formula yet to call SQL2000.MSI to
install to a default instance yet. Once I do this I will publish it to
Active Directory policy.

Can it be done?

thanks

P
