Using SQL Server on a network Ruby

sql server msde: I successfully installed MSDE on my Notebook and can
access the sample databases from the SQL Servers node
using Server Explorer (there are red crosses next to each
connection but when I click on them the crosses disappear
and the associated data is shown - is this normal?).

My problem is that when my computer is connected to the
network (at work) I can no longer access the SQL Servers.

When I click on SQL Servers I get the following message:
"Could not automatically discover any SQL Server
Instances. Choose Register SQL Server Instance from the
shortcut menu if you know there are SQL Server Instances
on this machine".

I work in education and would like to be able to set MSDE
up for use in the classroom.

I have spoken to Computer Services and they are not sure
what they need to do to get it working.

Help! Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly
appreciated?

Are you perhaps running XP SP2? If so then you will need to put a rule in
your Windows Firewall to allow discovery of SQL Servers
