sql server msde:
Hello everyone,

I posted this several days ago without response, so I thought I would try
again.

I've been trying to install MSDE2000RelA on a Win XP Pro machine without
success. The install rolls back every time. This machine formerly had Win ME
but has been upgraded to XP Home and then to XP Pro. I had the old SQL 7.0
based MSDE intalled under Win ME, but the upgrade to XP Home removed it from
the machine.

The following paste from the install log shows where the rollback apparently
begins. Can anyone suggest a work around that will enable me to get MSDE
installed? I've included several lines before and after "Return value 3".

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Andrea,
If I ever get the MSDE installed, I'll be using your DBAMgr2K as the
interface, but so far no luck!
After reading a lot of posts with installation problems, I found the
refererence to the clean uninstall procedure and followed it--no luck: same
rollback, same problem (something to do with the installation of PerfMon
values). This included deleting the registry keys and subkeys for "Microsoft
SQL Server" and "MSSQLSERVER", running msizap.exe, and deleting the SQL
Server folders under Program Files . The only thing I noticed is that msizap
does not return any confirmation of success. It just prints out a help list
of switches.

Just to be sure, though, I just went through the whole thing again with the
same results! I"m completely stumped.

hi Stephen,
[quoted text, click to view]

it seems you have to clear a previous installation of MSDE that has been
incorrectly or partially uninastalled without a full cleanup..
in order to completely remove an uninstalled MSDE instance you can have a
look at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320873 or
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q290991
I've been confortable with the second one, that unfortunately does not clear
the Windows Installer entry related to the MSDE package, so that an orhaned
entry is still available in the "Uninstall application" applet... in order
to clear that entry you have to use MSIzap.exe from the Platform SDK as
explained in the first KB article
