Setup failed to configure sefrver John Smith

sql server msde: I used the Setup.exe /qb+ INSTANCENAME=NetSDK
DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=1 SAPWD=<YOUR SA PASSWORD>
command to install MSDE on my windows XP professional
machine. Even though the setup kicks off without a
problem, towards the end it fails and says 'Setup was
unable to configure the server'. It then quits without
anu other info. Please advise.

Thanks

hi John,

this probably depend on previous MSDE installations...
please have a look at

I have had a similar problem for days now and have been unable to
resolve the issue despite reading a myriad knowledge base articles and
forum posts.

The steps I have taken are:
- Ensured there are no previous instances
- Enabled File and Print sharing
- Made sure the server service is running
- Disabled firewall and virus scanning
- Uninstalled XP SP2
- Updated MDAC to 2.8

When I look in the installation log, at the return value 3 section is
"Starting custom action ConfigServer
Executing "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\80\Tools\Binn\cnfgsvr.exe -V 1 -M 1 -U sa -I "INSTANCENAME" -Q
"SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS""
Setup failed to configure the server. Refer to the server error logs
and setup error logs for more information.
Action ended 17:14:36: InstallFinalize. Return value 3."

When I look in the the server install log, at the bottom is
"Warning: override, autoexec procedures skipped.
SQL Server is terminating due to 'stop' request from Service Control
Manager."

Could it have anything to do with having visual studio .NET installed
?

Anyone have any other ideas on how to resolve this issue ?

hi,
[quoted text, click to view]

I'd check and eventually clean both file system and registry entries, if
any, using the hints provided by
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q290991 .. this will
not clear MSDE Windows Installer related registry entries (I still have 1
ghost MSDE instance in the Add/Remove apps window that will be cleared
sometime at next OS reinstall :D) as you need MSIZap.exe, part of Platform
SDK as reported in
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320873

Hi Andrea,

Thanks for the link you posted. Have tried deleting all registry keys
but still have the same error.
