sql server msde : SQL Server configuraiton failed

I am installing MSDE Rel A on a XP Pro SP 2 box. I just installed XP Pro SP 2
and installed all the windows updates. I have not installed any other
software.

The error message reads:

Setup failed to configure the server. Refer to the serer error logs and
setup error logs for more information.

I tracked down the error into the cnfgsvr.out file:

###############################################################################

Starting Service ...

SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS

-m -Q -T4022 -T3659

An error occurred while attempting to start the service (1460)

SQL Server configuration failed.

###############################################################################

What does this mean? What is 1460?

The MSDE install log output last line:
Executing "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\cnfgsvr.exe
-V 1 -M 1 -U sa -I "MSSQLSERVER" -Q "SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS""

Thanks for the reply. I have seen this page. There are no previous instances
of MSDE/SQL Server. This is a first time installation.

I have installed MSDE many times, this is the first time I am installing
MSDE on a XP Pro SP2 system. It looks like MSDE will not install on XP Pro
SP2. If I cannot figure it out soon I will re-install the OS and just go to
SP1, I know that works.

Thanks for troubleshooting this installation problem.

I ran out of time so I re-installed the XP Pro, and then installed MSDE.
Everything is working as it should. I installed XP SP2 after MSDE was
successfully installed. That worked fine.

I would still like to understand why the SQL Server service was unable to
start, and what “An error occurred while attempting to start the service
(1460)” in the cnfgsvr.out means. I have been unable to find any
documentation anywhere regarding this startup problem.

I did find this same question asked on several other message boards, but no
answers.

hi Raymond,
[quoted text, click to view]

I know that installing MSDE sp3a on WinXP sp2 sometimes raises MDAC concerns
you usually will not be able to troubleshoot as you currently have not a way
to update/repair MDAC as WinXP sp2 ships with it's own MDAC 2.8 WinXP sp2
version, not currently available as a separate download..
