hi John,
[quoted text, click to view]

yes but you do not need to, as you can develop your app using, say, SQL
Server Dev edition and distribute SQLExpress to your end users.. you are not
required to develop against a SQLExpress edition (unless you want to use
"User Instance" feature, available for SQLExpress only
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnsse/html/sqlexpuserinst.asp)

SQLExpress will include in the (near?) future the Reporting Server engine,
so you can take advantage of the new VS2005 ReportViewer controls
(http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms251671(en-US,VS.80).aspx)
or you can use third party tools, Cristal, ActiveReport
(http://www.datadynamics.com/Products/ProductOverview.aspx?Product=ARNET2) ,
custom code
(http://www.codeproject.com/vb/net/dynamic_report_with_query.asp) or
whatever..

Hi all,

I've been progamming for some years now and only now do I have a situation
where I may choose the back-end db for a small new application - I was
thinking about SQL Express.

Firstly, I have SQL Server 2005 and Analysis Server 2005 running on my
machine as well as Sharepoint Portal Server 2003. Can I install Express and
develop on the same machine?

Secondly, and I think this might be in the wrong N.G. but surely you people
have come across this too - I have VS 2005 standard installed and thus no
Crystal reports (it only comes with Enterprise edition). What do you use to
produce reports over an Express database?

Regards
John.

Andrea, that's just an answer I'm looking for ... I'm preparing a quote and
wasn't sure about the db-side of things.

It's 2:00am and I need to get up at 5:00am so thanks a lot and cheers...

Regards
John.
