Hi Andrew,
Is SQL Server not starting or are you unable to log in (or both)?
To check if SQL Server is starting, take a look the "services" section of
Administrative Tools under Control Panel (alternately go to "Services" after
right-clicking My Computer and selecting "Manage"). If the service isn't
started, try to start it. If it won't start, check the System Event Log and
you'll usually find an error in there.
If SQL Server is starting, try connecting using Windows Authentication while
logged in as a member of the local administrators group on the system.
HTH,
