sql server new users: Hi,

I've two instances of SQL Server on the one machine. I'm using per seat
licensing. When I look in Control Panel, however, I only see one SQL Server
2000 Licensing applet, and no option to change between the instances. So
does one CAL allow you to use any instance of SQL server on that machine?

My thinking was that I needed separate CALs for each instance.

Thanks in advance,

SW

So, If one application using one instance needs 40 CALs, and another app
using another instance needs 10 CALs, then I need a total of 50 CALs. But
what if there's 40 users on the first app and only 5 on the second, what
happens when user no 41 wants to use the first app? Because I have no
options to set users per instance, I guess he can get on, until a total of
50 users is reached, regardless of which instance they're using?

By the way, both instances are SQL Standard edition.

Thanks,

SW

You need one CAL per user or device irrespective of how many
servers/instances they access.

Under Server/CAL licensing, to use multiple instances of Standard
Edition requires one server licence per *instance*. Enterprise Edition
requires one server licence per *server*.

I think you misunderstand what a CAL is. A CAL licences a USER or a
DEVICE to use SQL Server. It has nothing to do with connections to
applications, servers or instances. There is no limit on the number of
concurrent connections to a server or instance.

Lots more licensing info and an FAQ on the licensing site at the link I
posted.
