sql server new users : SQL Server Pricing

Hello,

I am considering moving a company's Access App to SQL Server. I am
confused about what I need to accomplish this in the way of Server Software.

The pricing on the Microsoft website says,

Standard Edition: $2249 with 10 Cals. The SQL Server would be running on
one network server, only. Would this be sufficient with an Access front
end? I plan to convert the front end to an Access Project. I am making the
change for security, not functionality. The owner is worried about
employees stealing the data.

Thanks for any advice and God Bless,

Mark A. Sam

How many users do you have? if its 10, then you read correctly. You need a
CAL for each user...

Yep...the basic SQL install is about 10 minutes. SP3 is longer, then you
should go to MS03-031 or SP4. I have not tested SP4 yet.

If you are using Access MDB, you need a DSN on each client machine. If
using ADP, you configure the connection under File>>Connection in the ADP
front-end and distribute it to the users. It will work for all of them,
assuming they can all see the SQL Server (i.e same LAN)

Thanks for the reply. There will probably be less than 10 concurrent users.

Here is another question if you will. Does SQL Server install as easily on
a network as on a desktop? I intalled the free version without a problem.
After I register a database, do I simply create DSN's to make it available
on the desktop? Is it that easy?

God Bless,

Mark

Whether users are concurrent or not doesn't matter with licensing for SQL
Server 2000 (it did for SQL Server 7). You need a license for every user
that accesses the server.

But if the number of users is that small, and you are upgrading from Access,
MSDE is probably suitable for your purposes. It is absolutely free to
download from http://www.microsoft.com/sql/msde/downloads/default.mspx

Thanks Jacco. I did a check and discovered that this company has SQL Server
installed and I have already begun moving the data.
