Yes is the answer to using VB.Net and MySQL.
In terms of posting questions, the
microsoft.public.sqlserver newsgroups are for Microsoft SQL
Server, not MySQL. If you have specific MySQL questions, you
can try posting to:
comp.databases.mysql
You can also find forums, tech articles etc for MySQL at:
http://dev.mysql.com/

I'm new to SQL. I have been asked to look into MySQL. I am starting to
develop in VB.NET.
Can you develop in VB.NET using mySQL as the database engine?
