Reboot the machine. The message for SQL Native Client means that some
files were write-locked so that the installer could not replace them.

Hi

I downloaded and tried to install the sp1. It went through once completely
with 'SQL Server Native Client' left out pending restart. I re-ran the
set-up, this time it did the client but on the second item 'Set-up support
files' it comes up with 'The following unexpected error occurred: Unable to
install Windows Installer MSP file' and then crashes (asks to send error
report).

What is the problem and how can I finish the sp1 install properly?

Thanks

Regards

Interesting enough I was able to repeat the problem. That is, I already
have SP1 installed it again, and it crashes with the error on the SQL
Server Support Files.

In your case, I think you can simply ignore this. If your description is
correct, you already have SP1 installed. All you needed was a reboot.
But it would be troublesome if you install a second instance of SQL 2005,
and want to upgrade it to SP1.

This appears to be a known issue. I found
https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=127012
which also includes description of a workaround.

Same thing happens every time despite restart. Even if files are locked why
does it crash i.e. tries to send error report?

Thanks
