sql server new users : Install problems with enterprise edition and vista

I have been trying to install SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition on a
Vista OS and am having a problem. After the install and the sp2
install, there is no instance of SQL Server running. I am new to SQL
Server (most of my experence is with Oracle) but I believe this to be
an incomplete installiation problem. I have tried everything I can
come up with to start an instance with out any luck.

Any suggestions?

Andrew,

Thanks for the reply. There is nothing under the service node. I
have been unable to start one. In the Object Explorer window there is
nothing to select to start/stop and when attempting to connect to a
server, there are none listed on the local tab.

Any ideas?

The 2 discs are Microsoft disc. I have tried installing them a few
different ways. The first three times I just inserted the first disc
and followed the prompts. It installs with the warning that sp2 is
needed before using and that not all features are avaliable with this
OS. After reading all of the potential problems from multiple
installs, I reinstalled the entire computer between each attempt. I
have also installed from a command prompt using a script from the
online books.

If it is helpful, there appears to be some items missing from the
programs menu (according to a reference book I purchased). The SQL
Computer Manager isn't there for one.

If you run SQL Server Configuration Manager do you see the instance under
the services node? If so is it running? If not start it.

I was afraid that was the answer. I have seen the system requirements
page before but I have also seen other microsoft pages that said it
was compatible using the sp2 for SQL 2005. Even the warning when
installing says to install the sp2 before using. Just to verify, I
should be OK if I get Server 2003 Standard and use it instead of Vista?

OK somehow you must not be selecting the engine itself only the tools. How
are you installing this? Is this from an MSDN CD?

I did not realize you had specified EE in the subject. I assumed you were
installing developer. I assume again that this is for development purposes?
You should look at using the developer edition. It runs on Vista and gives
you all the features of EE as well.

You can install SQL Server 2005 EE on a Windows Server 2003 SE, however as
Andrew mentioned, if you puspose is developing applications or testing then
you can use Developer Edition instead of Enterprise Edition. Developer
Edition has all the capabilities and features that EE has.

You can not install SQL Server 2005 EE on Windows Vista nor XP.

You can install Express, Standard and Developer Editions on Vista \ XP.

You may want to know about Requirements of SQL Server from the following
list:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506.aspx
