I don't know about the Business Intel. Studio. I have the tools
installed on a few clients for management purposes. The licensing I paid
for was per proc so I haven't been concerned about CALs, except for
windows server itself.

I don't think I've seen any actual licensing devoted to just the tools.
I would think that, if you're just using them for remote management
purposes, then you can install on as many clients as you need. This is
kind of like the terminal services administration role, where you can
remote desktop over to your servers from any clients you wish for
administrative purposes without buying licenses to do so.

If you have any questions, perhaps you can contact your 3rd party
reseller and have them ask their local MS licensing guru for the answer,

A client of mine has recently acquired SQL2005 on one server. They also have
about 5 other servers running SQL2000
Licencing for the server and for client access is very clear but I can't
seem to find a clear definition of the way the licensing for the client
tools, i.e. SQL Server Management Studio and Business Intelligence Studio
works.

Can they be

A) Installed on as many PCs as they want?
B) Installed on as many PCs as they have CALs
C) If B) what about per processor licenses

Common sense points to B, but as we all know common sense is not always
right when it comes to licensing ;-)

Any help on this would be most greatfully received

TIA

Thanks for your reply Jim.

I did get the client to contact their licencing partner who in turn
contacted Microsoft UK whose reply was that as long as you have the SQL
Server licence, you can install the client tools wherever you like.
