What books should I get to start with SQL Server ? Wayne

Howdy all,

I need to add SQL Server to my skillset as I am going to be involved in an
ERP implementation in the next 12 months that will rely heavily on it. I
have a background with Oracle and have done some pretty in depth development
with access, (an add on SAP tool I wrote in MS Access paid for my first
house). Can anyone point me to the must have texts that I should buy ?

TIA,

Wayne

From:
http://www.insidesqlserver.com/recommended/recommended.htm

'It's hard for me to know what books are really going to help someone
just getting started, as I have been working with SQL Server for over
19 years.'

This is like giving someone a degree in political science if they can
memorize their current party's talking points. Let us totally ignore
history and produce users who have the depth of knowledge a mile wide
and the breath of knowledge an inch deep. Shame on you.

You could atleast put this link up:
http://www.cs.berkeley.edu/~brewer/cs262/SystemR.pdf
A History and Evaluation of System R
Oct,1981

Least users don't get the idea that S2005 mystically materialized
out of MS labs.

It might also be benefical if the S2005 product managers were to
to take more than a passing glance it too.

Hi Kalen,

I have to confess I have decided to begin with "A Developer's Guide to SQL
Server 2005" as you have recommended on your excellent website because I'm
not very bright and am going to have to ease my way into SQL Server. :)

Kind Regards,

Wayne

Thanks for the feedback. Someday I might even get a comments section set up
on my site, so you could post feedback about how helpful different books
were. Everybody's got to start somewhere, and Mike Otey should be able to
help you with that.

Have fun!
