I suspect SQLExpress will not support it either. Perhaps someone else
can confirm/correct? Beta 2 was released earlier this week, but I
haven't had a chance to get a VirtualPC ready for installation yet.

For low to ever moderate volume notification apps, you could write your
own notification application. (Check out http://www.sqldev.net/ for a
smtp send mail sproc that can be used without the outlook client). But I
suspect it may be cheaper in the long run to buy SQL Server.
