sql server odbc : ODBC error and strange log entries

I am getting the following error

ODBC error: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Communication link failure

everytime I try to add a new field to a table in any database on my server.
I can do queries, I can add new tables. I just can't edit the structure of
an existing one. I am using version 2000.81.9041.40 of the driver.

I am also seeing some strange entries in the sql logs e.g.

Date: 7800
Source: C9EB
Message: Module(MSVCRT+0000C9EB) (_beginthread+000000CE)

Date: 7
Source: C57B382
Message: Module(KERNEL32+0000B382) (lstrcmpiW+000000B7)

etc.

Any help would be appreciated.
