sql server odbc: Running a 6 node Microsoft ASP (pre - .NET) application running SQLServer
2000 with up to 1500 users. When user load starts to peak, we're getting
'Data source name not found and no default driver specified', but the problem
is intermittent.

Are you aware of any scenarios in which this sort of error would surface

Hello,

I understand that you encountered intermittent errors regarding "Data
source name not found and no default driver specified'" on heavy load. If
I'm off-base, please let me know.

Based on my research, there is some known issue in odbc driver in MDAC
before 2.7. I'd like to know if you have installed latest MDAC 2.8 sp2 to
test.

How to obtain the latest MDAC 2.8 service pack
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884103/

You may want to boost the MaxUserPort and decrease TCPTimedWaitDelay

328476 Description of TCP/IP settings that you may have to adjust when SQL
Server connection pooling is disabled
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;328476

Because you use odbc dsn to connect to SQL server, you may also consider
use sql oledb provider directly without using DSN to isolate the issue. As
I know, ODBC driver for SQL Sesrver has not been updated for a while.

Since the issue occurs randomly and only appears under heavy load, we may
not be able to reproudce on our side. To find out the root cause of this
issue we may need to analyze memory dumps or live debug, this work has to
be done by contacting Microsoft Product Support Services. Therefore, we
probably will not be able to resolve the issue through the newsgroups. If
above steps don't help, I recommend that you open a Support incident with
Microsoft Product Support Services so that a dedicated Support Professional
can assist with this case. If you need any help in this regard, please let
me know.

please go to the following address on the World Wide Web:

If you have any questions or concerns on this, please feel free to let's
know. Thank you.
