sql server programming: Hi,

I am attempting to install SQL SERVER 7 sp4.
The installation starts ok, I choose windows authentication as the
connection mode and then the installation displays a dialog box saying
"validating user"

This screen just stays there and there is no activity beyond this point.

when I bring task manager up it says the program is still running, however
when "End task" I get a not responding dialogue about a process called
"_INS5176._MP"

Before I started the install I detached ALL user database and just left the
system ones attached.
I have started the install process with the SQL server switch both ON and
OFF, however the result is always the same.

can anybody please shed any light on this please.

many thanks in advance.

cheers

martin.

I experienced this just a couple of weeks ago. It was frustrating. For me
what was happening was that when the installer restarts the SQL Server
instance in single user mode I had a couple of applications
connecting to the SQL Server instance at the same time which took the only
available connection and shut out the service pack installer.

What I did was to go to the server and disconnect the network cable and
re-run the service pack installer. Once the service pack is installed
reconnect the network cable.
