After Googling on some key phrases for manual uninstall ...
[SQL server 2000 manual uninstall 2003]
... I was then taken to that article (I’m reading it now).
It was at that point that I realized that I had clicked on the link:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=290991and ... which is "a rocky road to know-where"
(note the "and" on the end of the link
- which is a part of the text from the message, and not the link).
I didn't realize this until later:

Hi
Check out the instructions at:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=290991and see if one of the methods works, otherwise you may want to try one of those
registry cleaning programs.

NOTE TO JOHN: I usually place any links that I might give on a separate line,
all by it's lonesome self, so as to avoid this sort of confusion.
*YES* - I KNOW I'm a big, fat, stooopid dummy-head for not seeing this in the
first place, but it's a situation that can be avoided with little effort;
All you have to do is to press that ENTER key a few extra times.
Thanks guys - I’ll let you know how this comes out.
... and now, back to that MS KB article ...
