sql server replication:
I have sqlserver.exe running on my Microsoft XP Pro via the Visual
Studio .net product, the student edition.

sqlserver.exe starts up when the computer starts up. After about 10
minutes, I see sqlserver.exe getting 2/3 of the cpu time, and all
programs trying to get to the internet, like ie explorer, going to
sqlserver.exe instead of the internet.

If I stop sqlserver.exe, then everything starts using the
internet again.

Any idea what I or Microsoft have done wrong?

Had you applied the last SP for SQL Server, or at lest teh SP2 and the
Slammer Patch? If not, DO IT RIGHT NOW. It seems to be a viral/worm
behavior.

I have no idea where those patches are. I've looked for patches on the
microsoft website(s) and have been unsuccessful finding patches. With XP
Pro, all I have to do is click one place and it scans for patches
needed, but I can't find where to get patches for the visual studio .net
and/or the sqlserver portion of it. Very frustrating.

I do have Norton Antivirus and Norton Internet Security running all the
time, if that's any help.

don't get too excited over high cpu utilization. All it
means is that your system is busy.

When this becomes of problem is when other processes which
need to be serviced can't get processor cycles.

Check your server work queues to see if they are greater
than 2. This means that processes are waiting for your
cpu to be less busy.

Also when you start sql server expect your log reader
agent and other replication agents to be busy processing
for a few minutes.
