sql server replication: Hello,

What happens when the publisher becomes unavailable in a
merge replication scenario. Will applications still be
allowed to read/write/access the subscriber?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, data can still be modified and the changes recorded
in MSmerge_contents and MSmerge_tombstone primarily. A
lack of connectivity will show up as an error when the
merge agent is run (synchronisation).
