sql server replication:
When or where does the Merge agent create a snapshot? Whenever I click on
the "Explore Snapshot" button, I get "file not found". Yet (on this
particular server), replication works perfectly.

The snapshot files could already have been cleaned up. Regenerate your
snapshot and see if you can explore it now.

Thanks Hilary. Of course, that gives me several followup questions:

When does the snapshot get "cleaned up" and why?
When you say "regenerate", you mean run the agent again?

A job runs daily at 1 am; the reason is to minimize disk space.

By regenerate I mean run the snapshot agent again. This may or may nor
regenerate the files. You may have to reinitialize the subscription to get
the files generated.

Hmmmm ... I don't understand why replication works without the snapshot
files.

it does, once they are applied and no longer needed they are deleted.
