sql server replication : Sql2K Merge Replication Remote Agent Activation Error 1011

In my customer's setup we have 1 publisher and 45 subscribers, with 6
publications. One server gets full data using a straight Push subscription.
All other servers receive full data for some publications and filtered data
for the other publications using HostName as the filter. To achieve this we
are using Remote Merge Agent Activation to allow the HostName value to be
resolved for each subscriber. We have been using Windows Server 2000 all the
while and recently have started migrating to Windows Server 2003, but
keeping Sql Server 2000. This has worked fine for the few servers that have
been upgraded.

Now we are having a problem with one of the new servers being upgraded to
Win2003. The following error occurs when selecting "Run agent at Subscriber"
and "Verify Subscriber" by right clicking the subscription from Enterprise
Manager, [Replication
Monitor\Publishers\Publisher_ServerName\Publication_Name]:
"The specified remote server name might not correspond to the network name
of the remote server or the remote server was unreachable due to network
problem."

However, there is no error when doing the same step from [Replication
Monitor\Agents\Merge Agents\Agent_Name]. Starting the agent from either path
gives the same error though.

The publications with straight push are working fine to the subscriber. All
configuration steps seem to have been strictly followed, configuring DCOM
for remote agent activation and so on. Pinging the servers from each is
successful.

What steps could be done to determine the extent of the problem? Any tools
that can be used...?

Thanks to all for your valuable input.

The better way to do this is to use pull subscriptions, but if you must use
push override the hostname() with the hostname parameter on your merge
agent.
