sql server replication : SQL 2000 Merge Replication over Web

Hi
We currently use VPN to allow 300+ remote clients to merge replicate to our
SQL 2000 server. I am interested in looking at the option of implementing
replication over the web as VPN is becoming a support headache and admin
heavy.

Any comments, resourses or feedback with your experience would be of great
help. Ideally I am looking for the least user interation with set up while
retaining security.

Thanks,

Micheal

I've done it for several clients. Basically you need to use ftp to
distribute your snapshot. Use filtering as much as possible to limit the
amount of data traveling over the internet.

Note that if you don't use a vpn you essentially have an unsecured solution.

Michael,
here is a link that might help:

VPN is the most secure. You could use TCP/IP and certificates though, and in
SQL server 2005 HTTPS.

Thanks Hilary,
We intend to use a certificate server and I see that we would be using Force
Protocol Encyrption. I was interested any points you may wish to offer in
general steps covered to complete this task - points that I will look into
deeper.

I have read so many variances in this process, I would greatly appreciate
your guidence and knowledge.

Hi Paul
Thanks for that - the process looks simple enough, though there seems to be
many variances in the what is documented out on the web!

Once again thank you.

Micheal
