What version of SQL Server are you running. In SQL Server 2005 Express you
cannot create publications.

Visual Studio installs a copy of SQLExpress and names this instance
SQLExpress. So chances are you are looking at SQL Express and not SQL Server
Standard.

I installed SQL Server Standard. When I launch Mangement Studio I logon to
machinename\SQLExpress. Does this indicate I have SQL Express? I am 100%
sure I downloaded SQL Server Standard from msdn?

Have a look under Computer Management (Services and Applications, Microsoft
SQL Servers) - maybe you have really installed the Standard Edition as well
as the Express Edition (presumably via VS).
