sql server replication : What are "Client" and "Server" Subscription?

Can someone please explain what either of these are in 2005 Merge
Replication?

server is meant for when you are doing republishing. client is meant for
when you are replicating to another server and the data is not republished
on the subscriber.

Chris,
you might be more familiar with the names global and local from SQL Server
2000 (Local=Client, Global=Server).
