sql server reporting services:
Hello,
We have been using Reporting Services for a few months doing some prototyping and it has gone well enough that we are now being tasked with rolling out an implementation to the enterprise. Here is the hardware that I have to work with:

3 Web Server Cluster managed via Application Center
1 Active/Passive Sql Server Cluster (IIS Installed for XMLA) Attached to fiber array.

So here is my dilema. Is it better to install the Reporting Services WebService on the web servers and have them all pointing to the database server or should I install the web servcies on the same box as the Database. In my mind it could work either way and may even keep the web servers cleaner to go with option 2. I see that the directions show how to install RS into the web farm as in my option 1 but before I went either way I thought I would ping the source and see what you all though.

Thanks for any guidance and direction you may be able to give. Thanks.

Thank you for your response. I was also leaning the same way (putting RS on the app servers instead of the database server). I now have one extra question then. Is there a way that I can just install the database onto the server without installing the web pieces. I have not been able to just find the database script. Please advise how I may make a clean a seperate install. Thanks.

Hi Rich,

Thanks for your post.

From your descriptions, I understood that you would like to find out a more
proper machine to install Reporting Services. Have I understood you?
Correct me if I was wrong.

Based on my scope, it's hard to tell which one might be better. I am not
sure the workload of your database server and web server. I am also not
sure the scenario and requirement of your project.

Generally speaking, it is not recommend to install additional application
in the database server as SQL Server may eat up the resource of machine
when workload was high. From the limited information here, I would love to
select installing Reporting Services in the web server.

Thank you for your patience and corperation. If you have any questions or
concerns, don't hesitate to let me know. We are here to be of assistance!

Sincerely yours,

Michael Cheng

Your response here is a bit confusing. RS is a web application. It is a web
application that needs SQL Server Database Server to manage its data. As
part of the install process it needs to install the database on a SQL Server
Database Sserver that resides either locally or somewhere else. It looks
like your plan is to have the database reside on a different server. There
is no script to run, the installation of the RS connects to the SQL Server
DB Server. If you are doing a web farm then follow the instructions for
installing a web farm (note that you have to have a SQL Server enterprise
license on each server of the web farm and an enterprise license on the SQL
Server DB Server).

Hello Bruce L-C [MVP],

Thanks for the response. Yes indeed I was looking to install the actual database on a different server than the web servers. I was not aware of the licensing that you were speaking of. I have read through the license but did not take away that tidbit of information. So what if I ran the RS app on IIS that is hosted on same server as the database server? What would the license requirements be then?

Thanks
Rich
