sql server reporting services : Render to Excel without formatting

We have run into a critical performance issue with Excel rendering extension.
Is there any way, undocumented or not, to render to MS Excel without
formatting? I have searched this group and other resources and it looks like
the answer is no. Though, I thought I would try just in case.

Microsoft, please chalk this up as a load plea for this feature ASAP. In
short, my user base is comparing the export performance of Crystal Reports
and MSRS Excel exports. For example, a query rendered unformatted to Excel
in Crystal takes 60 secs where as is taking 15 minutes for MSRS to render the
same Excel file. Since most of our analysts run reports and then export the
data to further analyze it, this performance difference is painful.

Jeff, thanks for the suggestions! We are using CSV at the moment as a
work-around. By the way, if you set <TAB> as the delimiter, there is no need
to perform “text to columns”. :)

Unfortunately, grouping rows are being translated into extraneous columns
when the reports are exported to CSV. Even worse, most of our reports have a
sub-report at the top which makes the CSV output even more worthless. This
means that analysts have to delete a lot of columns before they can actually
use the Excel data. This CSV work-around is really not an acceptable

Can you get by with CSV? Your users might have to do a text-to-columns
conversion, but that will take a lot less than 15 minutes.

That sounds familiar. I recall in one of Microsoft's hands-on sessions a
recommendation that if you want to export to Excel, it's really best to
create a separate report purely optimized for Excel, that is, with a very
simple table layout that looks the way you want it to look in the exported
version.

Cheers,
