sql server reporting services:
Just starting to work my way through the Blackburn & Vaughn book to figure
out RS. One thing I need to figure out though so that I can sell this thing
to my boss: we have a SQL 2000 database that holds all of our study data.
It looks like that makes us good on the licensing, and I was planning on
having RS run on a different machine. Question is: will RS run in the same

Here's my two cents...

Our corporate policy was to NOT install IIS on a SQL Server box (For
security reasons). That required us to install RS on another web
server. Once that separation (sql server and rs) took place however,
we realized that we not only needed to purchase another SQL Server
License but were required based upon rereading the licensing aggreement
to compensate. RS is only free if you install it on a box that has SQL
Server installed it or you have an extra license.

Your question(s):
Q1: Will RS run in the same instance of SQL that we're currently using
for our data?
Answer 1: Yes, it will run on a SQL Server box (Enterprise and
Standard)
Q2: Is that wise?
Answer 2: Depends on who's policing your servers and/or your
DBA's. Our policy is no, but with that being said, you should
definitely
take another look at the licensing requirements.
