In what scenarios will i have to use "custom code"
(Report->Properties->CustomCode tab) for a report ? Is there any
example i can see ?

My philosophy is to first try to solve without using it. I have had to use
it very seldom. Usually expressions will work. Make sure you understand the
power of expressions (remember that a lot of VB functions are accessible
from expressions). Then only go to code if you have to. The BOL has examples
on how to use Code behind.
