sql server reporting services: My CIO bought and is pushing for me to deploy Hyperion Performance suite
reporting as the enterprise reporting tool...

I farking hate it...

Is MS SQL Reporting services mature enought to be relied on for enterprise
wide reporting?

I am risking my job on this fight...

thanks

Hi Ken,

I have done a huge project with the predecessor of the current Hyperion
software and I also evaluated the current one in a beta stage.
We are also doing a lot with MS RS.

To answer your question: It depends... (quite helpful, I know...)
Hyperion offers great functionality for designing reports - even relatively
unexperienced users without technical background are able to answer their
business questions by dragging and dropping fields from the meta model.
Their EIS technology offers a great platform for designing "reporting
applications".
Integration (on the application level) into other applications might be a
little difficult if you are not a JAVA freak.

If you just want some developers create reports and publish it through the
web, the MS Reporting Services might do the job.

Hope this helps,

Andreas

Hi Kp,

as other users have found, there are certain complexities such as fixed page
layouts which are difficult within RS. RS still has some rendering issues.
But generally, for a first version, it's pretty amazing. Especially with
subscriptions (and data driven subscriptions) out of the box.

From experience, you really want to ensure you can do all your reports in RS
before moving to it - make sure RS can handle all the features you require.

There are certain things in which RS offers over Crystal from a designer
perspective, but there are some things which Crystal can easily do which are
difficult or impossible in RS.

Mind you, it's a new tool, so there are many things that I have yet to
understand about it

regards

Matt

Ken,

We are making the move to RS from many different plaforms (Cognos, Crystal,
Essbase).

Our main reason is the SQL server total cost of ownership; for example, we
can build import data via DTS into SQL; easily build cubes with AS; and
report data with RS using URL'S -- all for a fraction of the cost of
prepackaged solution, and we don't need 5 programmers to do all of that.

RS is not the answer to everything (especially with OLAP), but neither are
any other products, so I don't think you are risking your job.

HTH

Jim
