I have a simple report that will be printed out and additional information
will be hand written into the report in the field.

I need to have a column in the report that does not exist within the dataset
that the report is bound to, what is the best approach to achieve this?

Right click a column, then click "insert column to the right" and leave the
content blank. This creates a new blank column with 1 cell per each row in
the dataset.
