sql server reporting services:
Does MS Reporting Services allow us to embed GIS map like Crystal? Also, can
you embed something like an "iframe" in a MS report?

Thanks

Hello Jenny,

Based on my scope, GIS Map is not supported in reporting service currently.
However, please rest assured your feedback on this is routed to the proper
channel.

Also, in SQL 2005, you could click "send feedback" button in toolbar to
send your feedback to product team directly. Thanks.

You can do ad hoc reports with RS 2005 too.

Can you guys explain to me in general terms what would be the major
differences between Crystal Reports and Reporting Services?

Thanks,

Liliana

The major difference would be price. Web delivery of Crystal is wildly
expensive.

I have not looked at the new end-user designer in RS2005, but from
experience, designing a report in Crystal is easier for an end user. It is
more powerfull with RS if you are a developper.

I personnaly think the 2 complement each other. I use RS to develop reports
used by everybody. The output is the gold standard. My users use a
combination of Crystal and Excel to create ad-hoc reports.

Sort of. As I said, I've not had a good look at RS2005, but with RS2000, I
would not want to give users VS and you have to deploy to RS in order to
print or export. We can argue a long time as to which is better for laying
down a report, but for the fine finish work, layout, attributes and such,
Crystal is still better in the hands of a user. Just try to explain the iif
statement required to change the colour of a field depending on value, as
opposed to a bunch of point and click.

Don't get me wrong, I do think that RS is the way to go. But it's still a
'geek' interface.

Not so in 2005, they've added Data Views and models (which allow you to
create seperate user friendly related tables, naming conventions etc,.) and
an ad hoc report builder that looks to be very user friendly. I yet have to
expose our users to it but what I've done myself looks very easy and highly
pre-configurable. Once users have made their own reports you can import
these into the developer designer for refinement if you need to.

I just had a look at Report Builder. Yes it's a good step, but Crystal
it's not. I still think that both solutions have their place, and often
alongside each other. Getting rid of one because you are using the other
means sacrificing a lot. OTOH, if the Crystal licensing model for web
deployment was not so expensive, I'd likely stick with that.

MS has a big hit with RS. You can't argue with the price or the
functionality. I agree that Report Builder is a good step towards moving
some of the design work towards the users.

While continuing to improve RS, MS should also start to develop a
designer very much like Crystal and sell it. I'd pay for a few licenses
of a full featured, user-friendly designer.
