sql server reporting services : Trouble Installing MS Reporting Services

Hello,

I am unable to install MS Reporting Services. After I go through with the
installation, at the very last screen it says 'you ned to install SQL Service
Pack 3A first'. What should I do?

Here is what I have already done... in detail

1. I was running Windows XP, so I formated my hard drive and set up two
partions. One for MS Windows 2000 Server and Windows XP.

2. When installing Windows 2000 Server, I also installed IIS. I do see the
words IIS when I go to Start- Programs- MS SQL Server- Configure SQL XML
Support in “IIS”. Though it doesn't show in Control Panel- Add/Remove
Programs.

3. I resolved all conflicts in device managers and updated Windows XP and
2000 Server.

4. On the Windows 2000 Server Operating System, I installed Windows 2000
Service Pack 4 (it is listed in Control Panel- Add/Remove Programs)

5." ", I installed .Net Framework 1.1 (shows everywhere)

6. Installed, MS SQL Server 2000 (shows everywhere)

7. Installed SQL Server Agent (don’t show the words Server Agent Control
Panel)

8. Installed Front Page Extensions (doesn’t show the words Frontpage
Extensions in Control Panel)

9. Installed MS Office 2000 Premium, though not required (shows everywhere)

10. Downloaded SQL Service Pack 3A from MS Website- files titled, sql2ksp3
and sql2kasp3. Installed them in that order. (It does not show in Control
Panel)

11. Installed Requirements for MS Visual Studio.Net 2003 off of the CD
(shows everywhere)

12. Installed MS Visual Studio.Net 2003 (shows everywhere)

13. Tested SQL and Visual Studio to ensure they worked correctly.

14. Finally, after all that I installed Reporting Services, which I
downloaded at the MS website and received the error, 'you ned to install SQL
Service Pack 3A first'.

I already did that (step 10). All this work for nothing?!! It is important
to note that I did not configure any setting in SQL or Visual Studio. What am
I missing? What step should I have taken..

Please let me know.

I spent way too much time to get this error in the end. Thanks very much in
advance…

Hi,

Thanks for your response. OK, I typed that in. And got:

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - 8.00.194 (Intel X86) Aug 6 2000 00:57:48
Copyright (c) 1988-2000 Microsoft Corporation Standard Edition on Windows NT
5.0 (Build 2195: Service Pack 4)

Now what? Please post here. Thank you

Go into Query Analyzer and do this:

Select @@Version

And let us know the version.

That is my point, I already did this in 'step 10'.

I went throught the steps of installing Service Pack 3A and SQL continues to
label itself Standard Edition. To make sure I just reinstalled, service
packs sql2ksp3, sql2kasp3 and sql2kdesksp3. Yet when I run that query, it
still says I am running Standard Edition. Please kindly advise. Thank you.

I did exactly what the instructions told. I just installed sql2ksp3,
sql2kasp3 and sql2kdesksp3 in that order. What did I do wrong? If anyone
can advise, please post here. Thanks in advance.

You have no service packs installed for SQL Server. Here is a link that
shows you how to tell what you have:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;321185#2

Here is a table from the above link:

The following table lists the Sqlservr.exe version number:

Release Sqlservr.exe
RTM 2000.80.194.0
SQL Server 2000 SP1 2000.80.384.0
SQL Server 2000 SP2 2000.80.534.0
SQL Server 2000 SP3 2000.80.760.0
SQL Server 2000 SP3a 2000.80.760.0

As you can see, you do not have 3a installed. You will want to do that as
soon as possible because you system is vulnerable to the slammer virus until
you apply SP3a.

You are doing something wrong with how you are applying the SP. I suggest
posting a question in the SQL Server newsgroup.

Thanks for your responses- I appreciate them.

I have read the readme document on the MS website for the first time, and I
think I know what the problem is.

I just downloaded the files sql2ksp3 and sql2kasp3- saved them to my
desktop. From their I just double clicked on them and let them run. I think
what I need to do is go to the folder where it was installed (after it ran)
and then open the file titled Setupsql.exe. Is that right?

Please let me know. I apologize that I might be asking stupid questions,
but this is all new for me. I will try it this evening and post the results
here for all to see.

And for another, unless you are running analysis services then you don't
need sql2kasp3.

Have you read sp3readme.htm?

For one thing, if you are installing SQL2k2sp3, you do not need to install
sql2kdesksp3.

I just applied the sql2ksp3 and didnt bother abt the other two.
Installation went well on my system. I use win2003 Server EE and also
the RS EE.
I too had a tough time installing RS on Win2000 server but that was a
different issue altogether.
Did u go to windowsupdate and installed all the fixes to the
windows2000 Server before you installed all the rest ? just in case,
you never know what goes on inside these MS products.

Hi,

The real thing I want to get accomplished is to install Reporting Services.

When I try to install Reporting Services, I get an error saying that I need
SQL with Service Pack 3A. That is the reason for my question- to have
Reporting Services installed.

Yes, I did install Service Pack 4 to Windows 2000 Server, .Net Framework,
Frontpage Extensions and IIS. I really hope that at this point it works.

Thanks for the info about installing only one file. How did you install
this file? Did you just double click the service pack, let it run (it runs
twice), locate the file Setupsql.exe and run that? Or something else.

Correct, all you did was unpack the files, you never ran setup. Also, unless
I am mistaken, I don't think you have analysis services installed and don't
need analysis services.

When u double click, it only extracts the files to a location. Then you
have to go where it extracted and run setup.bat from there. Its
basically a set of 11 or 12 scripts that run during the setup. If you
havent seen the screen saying installing 1 of 11, 3 of 11 etc you
havent installed the SP.
